Since our childhood, we have been taught that milk is the ultimate food that we need for the betterment of our health. Our grandmothers still believe milk to be the shield against any bodily weakness or immunity germs. They also consider milk as the best calcium source which are definitely milk myths.

Milk is considered to be a balanced meal comprising of protein, fats and carbohydrates along with various nutrients such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin B. But, not to forget, recently quite a many controversies have come up regarding the claimed qualities of milk. This scenario exposes us to the milk myths that our society believes in. Well, the crying need of hour is that you should know what actually milk gives you and solve the riddle of does it really benefit us?

  1. Milk should be the first thing you have in morning-

This is one of the most misleading milk myth that our parents guide us through. Though milk is full of nutrients and thus great for your morning breakfast, still drinking milk in an empty stomach might not be helpful for you.

Situation might worsen if you suffer from poor digestion and gastric problems. Our day should always be started something light that would help in cleansing our food system. Buttermilk can be a great example. Even those who are quite prone to flu or cough issues, should not have milk at first in the morning.

2. Milk is the best source of Calcium-

No doubt, milk is an amazing source of calcium, but not certainly the best one. There are better sources available in the market, such as chia seeds which contain six times more calcium than milk as acclaimed. If compared, its proven that while 100ml of milk contains just 125g of calcium, 100g of ragi contains 344g, in the first place. Thus it is a great remedy for calcium deficiency in your bones.

Secondly, our bodies lose the capability of breaking down calcium from milk, after the age of 3 and thus our capability to absorb the milk protein reduces. Also, a good amount of vitamin D is very necessary to absorb calcium from food. Thus, next time try to consume more of vitamin D if you want milk to benefit you.

3.  Two glasses of milk should be taken everyday-

Milk isn’t a nutritional requirement and can be a dietary choice. Therefore, dairy can be added to the diet by even yogurt or cheese, thus nullify the milk myth.

You don’t need to rely on milk because the idea is just to fulfill the daily requirement of protein an calcium and that can be done even from other sources. So, consuming two glasses of milk everyday isn’t mandatory.

4. Milk is a meal itself-

Milk should never be a substitute for your regular meal though it’s a nutrient dense food. It is one of the biggest milk myths that milk can be consumed as a meal itself. Other than calcium, your body necessarily requires vitamins, carbohydrates and more importantly fiber, which is surely missing in milk.

Substituting your meal with milk would reduce the calories in your body, especially in children and cause problems in growth and development of your body.

5. Milk causes bloating-

Milk in general does not cause any kind of bloating, though it might happen in cases when you are lactose intolerant and consume milk with certain foods. For instance, milk should never be consumed with fruits because it might cause some acidic reaction in your body.

TIP: Milk can be taken with some cereal, turmeric or cinnamon powder or even brewed Tulsi or tea leaves, which can prove to be really healthy.
