Jeff Preston Bezos, the American entrepreneur, and CEO of the very famous online retail company Amazon.com is an inspiration to us all.
Here are seven interesting facts about him that you did not know :
1. His grandfather inspired him
Lawrence Preston Gise, Jeff’s maternal grandfather worked as Regional Director at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. It was him who fuelled Jeff’s curiosity and got him interested in computers. An inspiration and a role model for millions today, Jeff was inspired by his grandfather to create and invent since then.
Even great men have a humble beginning. No matter what we are today, if we dream big and strive to work hard, even we can make it big against all odds.
2. He quit a seriously lucrative job to start Amazon.com
Jeff was a senior vice president at D.E. Shaw, an investment firm in New York when he quit his job to venture into this risky endeavor. He had to rent a house in Seattle and work from his garage with only one employee during the initial days of Amazon.
Seems we can all learn a lot from his belief in himself and his passion. Trust your guts and march on!
3. His brainchild, Amazon picked up success within just 30 days of its initiation
Within just 30 days of its commencement, Amazon.com had sold books in 45 foreign countries and across the United States. Then, in just two months, the net profit of the company had accelerated to $20,000 a week.
Hence, we can all learn from this man to plunge into risky ventures because of bigger the risk, bigger is the reward!
4. He named and renamed his company
Before Amazon.com, the company had many other names. Bezos had initially named it Cadabra.inc. Then he felt he had to rename it because he felt the name of the company sounded like “cadaver inc.” over the phone. Later he again changed it to Relentless.com and finally settled on Amazon.com.
The name for Amazon.com comes from the South American river with the same name. And, the logo bears an arrow from A to Z, indicating that customers can buy anything from A to Z on the site.
5.He is bookish by nature
He believes in going by the books. Many times he borrows methods and work plans from them and applies them completely, even if there are risk and uncertainty involved.
You can be quite a ‘person of methods’ by taking a cue from him!
6. He believes in the ‘two-pizza rule’
‘If a team cannot be fed with two pizzas, it’s too large.’ Jeff is a staunch believer in individualistic ideas and thoughts. He thinks large meetings or teams are unproductive. Hence he used his two-pizza team rule to create a decentralized workplace in Amazon wherein small teams interact and innovate.
If you are thinking of evolving your workplace environment and increase productivity, you could give Bezon’s innovative rule a try! After all, his ‘two-pizza’ mantra has definitely led Amazon ahead.
7. He has a fascination with space science and travel
When 18-year old Bezos was named high school class scholar, he had said in an interview that “he wanted to build space hotels, amusement parks and colonies for 2 million or 3 million people who would be in orbit. ‘The whole idea is to preserve the earth’… The goal was to be able to evacuate humans. The planet would become a park.”
His fascination and love for space led him to start a human spaceflight company, ‘Blue Origin’ in 2000. It aims at aiding paid space travel for willing customers in the future. It also aims at reducing the space flight cost by using reusable rockets.
You are not foolish to have multiple interests and to pursue them as long as you have the zeal and the determination to put in all the hard work it needs!
And as Jeff puts it, “Work hard, have fun, make history.”
